1. Prof. Fernando PRIETO RAMOS, Faculty of Translation and Interpreting, University of Geneva
Topic: Legal Translation Quality Assurance: Needs and Approaches
Fernando PRIETO RAMOS is Full Professor of Translation, director of the Centre for Legal and Institutional Translation Studies (Transius) and currently Dean at the University of Geneva’s Faculty of Translation and Interpreting. With a background in both Translation and Law, his work focuses on legal and institutional translation, including interdisciplinary methodologies, international legal instruments and specialized terminology. He teaches legal translation at postgraduate level, and is advisory board member of a number of Translation Studies journals. Former member of the Centre for Translation and Textual Studies at Dublin City University, he has published widely on legal translation and discourse analysis, and has received several research and teaching awards, including a European Label Award for Innovative Methods in Language Teaching (European Commission, 2002), an International Geneva Award (Swiss Network for International Studies, 2014), and a Consolidator Grant (ERC-SNSF, 2015). He has also translated for several organizations since 1997, including five years as an in-house translator at the World Trade Organization (dispute settlement team).

Abstract of the speech of Prof. Fernando PRIETO RAMOS
The debate on translation quality is becoming more prominent as market fragmentation and productivity demands increase in parallel with technological advances and budgetary constraints. In this context, legal translation is commonly considered a highly specialized branch of translation for which specific expertise is required to ensure quality. This is essential in order to preserve legal certainty and individual rights in scenarios where professional translation comes into play, for example, in supranational law-making and application, or in criminal proceedings that involve more than one language (as highlighted by Directive 2010/64/EU). After a short review of existing approaches to translation quality, the paper will address how research can contribute to enhancing quality. The need and requirements for specific benchmarks in legal translation will be highlighted. It will be argued that the variability of contextual and legal conditions in this field must be articulated in overarching methodological models that lead to adequate translation solutions. Building on a methodology of this kind, tested in professional practice, an integral approach to quality assurance will be presented that takes the decision-making process as starting point to define the components of specialized competence and product evaluation in legal translation.
2. Prof. Dr Hendrik J. Kockaert, Faculty of Arts, KU Leuven
Topic: Qualetra
Prof. Dr Hendrik J. Kockaert lectures French Linguistics, Terminology, Legal Translation, and Translation Technology at KU Leuven, Faculty of Arts, in Antwerp. Since August 2015, he is Dean of the Faculty of Arts on Campus Sint Andries in Antwerp. He is a Research Associate at the University of The Free State, Republic of South-Africa. He is a certified LICS Auditor for granting ISO 17100 certification to translation services, and he is the Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Internationalisation and Localisation [JIAL]. He is the Chairperson of ISO TC 37 SC 1 and a member of NBN, the Belgian Standardization Institute. He is an expert in the development of ISO terminology standards. He is a certified ECQA (European Certification and Qualification Association) Terminology Manager Trainer and Job Role Committee Provider. He was the coordinator of the following projects financed by the European Commission: QUALETRA (JUST/2011/JPEN/AG/2975), and LIT Search (JUST/2013/JPEN/AG/4556). He publishes in the areas of terminology, translation quality assurance, and translation technology.
Abstract of the speech of Prof. Dr Hendrik J. Kockaert
Qualetra contributes towards achieving common minimum standards of procedural rights in criminal proceedings by ensuring that the basic rights of suspected and accused persons are protected sufficiently through the translation of the European Arrest Warrant (EAW) and its essential documents. Qualetra focusses on the monitoring of the typical work environment of legal translators (LTs) and legal practitioners (LPs) involved in cross-border cooperation in criminal proceedings. In order to enhance mutual recognition within the EU, measures of promoting mutual trust are crucial, and such trust ultimately relies on reliable communication, hence in the multilingual EU, on adequate legal translation. The overall impact is the conduction of transparent, cost-effective criminal proceedings in the EU courts guaranteeing an efficient interaction with the beneficiaries of translation services, police, prosecutors, court staff, judges, lawyers and professionals providing victim support. The project objectives focus on corpus related research (multilingual term base for LTs and LPs, multilingual templates of the EAW including the most frequent archetypical and recurrent phraseologies), training (core curriculum and a sample of training materials), testing, evaluation and assessment procedures (joint certification framework) for LTs.

1. Dr hab. Łucja Biel, Institute of Applied Linguistics, University of Warsaw; Dariusz Koźbiał, Institute of Applied Linguistics, University of Warsaw
Topic: The Polish Eurolect Project: tracking factors underlying the quality of institutional translation
Dr hab. Łucja Biel is an Associate Professor and Acting Head of the Institute of Applied Linguistics, University of Warsaw, Poland. She was a Visiting Lecturer on the MA in Legal Translation at City University London (2009-2014). She has been an English-Polish legal translator since 1997, an expert member of the Polish Association of Sworn and Specialized Translators (TEPIS) and an expert for the Polish Normalization Committee (PKN). She is Secretary General of the European Society for Translation Studies (EST) and deputy editor of the Journal of Specialised Translation. She holds an MA in Translation Studies (Jagiellonian University of Kraków), PhD in Linguistics (University of Gdańsk), Diploma in English and EU Law (University of Cambridge) and a School of American Law diploma (Chicago-Kent School of Law and University of Gdańsk). She has published over 40 papers on legal/EU translation, legal terminology, translator training and corpus linguistics, as well as the book Lost in the Eurofog. The Textual Fit of Translated Law (Peter Lang, 2014).
Dariusz Koźbiał is a PhD candidate at the Faculty of Applied Linguistics, University of Warsaw. In 2015, he graduated from the Institute of Applied Linguistics, University of Warsaw, with an MA in Applied Linguistics. Currently, he is involved as co-investigator in a research project The Eurolect: an EU variant of Polish and its impact on administrative Polish. He has recently finished a three-month-long translation traineeship in the Directorate-General for Translation at the European Parliament in Luxembourg.
2. Dr hab. Joanna Dybiec-Gajer, Institute of Modern Languages, Pedagogical University of Cracow
Topic: How to measure quality in translation?
Dr hab. Joanna Dybiec-Gajer is Associate Professor in the Institute of Modern Languages, Chair for Tranlator Education, at the Pedagogical University of Cracow. She is a sworn translator of English and German. She is a graduate of Universität Paderborn, Germany (Ph.D.) and Jagiellonian University of Cracow. Her research interests include Translation Studies: translator training, translation quality assessment and sworn translation. She authored many publications in these areas, including Guidebook Gazes. Poland in American and German Travel Guides (Münster 2004), Verba Volant, Scripta Manent. How to write an M.A. thesis in Translation Studies (co-authored with Maria Piotrowska, 2012), and Zmierzyć przekład? Z metodologii oceniania w dydaktyce przekładu pisemnego (2013).
3. Dr Karolina Stefaniak, Directorate General for Translation (DGT) of the European Commission
Topic: Terminology work in the European Commission: Ensuring high-quality translation in a multilingual environment
Dr Karolina Stefaniak holds MA in Applied Linguistics and PhD in Humanities, both obtained from University of Warsaw. She has been working in the Polish Language Department in the Directorate General for Translation (DGT) of the European Commission in Luxembourg as a translator since 2008 and as the main terminologist since 2013. She has published a book on doctor-patient communication and various papers on that topic, as well as papers on critical discourse analysis, translation of medical texts and EU translation. She has participated in a number of conferences, seminars and workshops on translation and terminology, including the International Terminology Summer School (Cologne 2011) and Seminar on Machine Translation and Terminology Extraction (Leeds 2013).
4. Monika Popiołek, MAart Agency Ltd, Polish Association of Translation Agencies (PSBT), Polish Normalisation Committee (PKN)
Topic: ISO Standards Framework for QA in Legal Translation
President of MAart Agency Ltd since 1991 and Mobiling Ltd. since 2011. Graduate of the University of Warsaw English Institute (MA), Executive MBA Programme at the Warsaw University of Technology Business School (WUT BS, London Business School, HEC Paris, NHH Bergen – joint MBA programme), and a PhD Management Programme at the Warsaw School of Economics (SGH) – research specialization in strategic quality management.
Monika is currently the President (since 2009) of the Polish Association of Translation Companies (PSBT), a certified sworn translator and interpreter (since 1998), standards expert, part-time management lecturer, auditor trainer, Chair of the Polish Committee for Standardization (PKN) General Issues & Management Systems Sector, and the PKN Technical Committee 256 on Terminology, Other Language Resources and Content Management (ISO TC 37 Mirror Committee), as well as OASIS, ISO and CEN expert (since 2007).
She has contributed to a number of publications on standards, QA and strategic quality management, presented at all the leading industry conferences (LocWorld, ATA, TM-Europe, ATC, EUATC etc.) and is affiliated with many language and management industry organisations. She is also a voting ATA member and an expert member of TEPIS.
As a standards expert and trainer Monika specializes in: EN 15038, ISO 17100, ISO 9001, ISO 9004, ISO/IEC 82079-1, ISO 13485, ISO 27001, XLIFF, TBX, EFQM, TQM, Kaizen, Six Sigma etc. Monika is the Project Leader for the new ISO 20771 standard for Legal and Other Specialist Translation Services which is currently under development within ISO TC37/SC5.
Topic: Working for a law firm – does a translator need any additional skills?
Agnieszka Hein is a sworn translator and court interpreter, member of the Polish Society of Sworn and Specialized Translators TEPIS, legal translator at Greenberg Traurig Grzesiak sp. k., the teacher of translation at Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Studies in Translation and Interpreting (IPSKT) since 2005.
Topic: Quality in Legal Translation from Freelancer’s Perspective
Translator and interpreter of English language with 20 years of experience, specializing in legal and financial translations; licensed sworn translator of English language from 1995. Graduate of the Faculty of Applied Linguistics at the University of Warsaw, Postgraduate European Studies Program of the University of Warsaw and the University of Maastricht, as well as Postgraduate Management and Business Studies at the Faculty of Management and Business Administration of the University of Warsaw.
Lecturer in legal translation at the Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Translation Studies Program (IPSKT) at the Faculty of Applied Linguistics of the University of Warsaw and guest lecturer at other universities in Poland and abroad. Works as a translator and interpreter for Polish Ministries, courts, banks and law firms. Founding member of the Polish Society of Sworn and Specialized Translators TEPIS, Member of the Board of the Society since 2005 and its Vice President since 2008.

8. Prof. dr hab. Małgorzata Tryuk, Institute of Applied Linguistics, University of Warsaw
Topic: Training translators/interpreters at MA translation programmes: good practices
Professor Małgorzata Tryuk, Ph.Litt., Ph.D., and MA is Full Professor of Translation and Interpreting Studies at the Institute of Applied Linguistics University of Warsaw, Poland. She is also the local Coordinator of the EMCI Post Graduate Program at the University of Warsaw. For 8 years she has been the Head of the Department of Translation Studies and since 2015 she is the Head of the Department of Interpreting Studies and Audiovisual Translation at the Institute of Applied Linguistics. In 2000 she launched the first academic program in Legal Translation and Interpreting at a Polish university (IPSKT University of Warsaw). She is the editor of books on interpreting and translation, as well as the author of a numerous books and articles in Polish, French and English dealing with interpreting and translating in public services, conference interpreting and translating. She is a freelance translator; member of organizations and institutions related to translation and interpretation (e.g. STP, Polish Association of Translators and Interpreters) and member of the European Society for Translation Studies.
9. Dr Agnieszka Biernacka, Institute of Applied Linguistics, University of Warsaw
Topic: Achieving Quality in Translation through Postgraduate Studies
Dr Agnieszka Biernacka is a court interpreting researcher, legal translator and court interpreter trainer and sworn translator/interpreter certified by the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Poland. Dr Agnieszka Biernacka is an Assistant Professor in the Institute of Applied Linguistics and Head of the Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Studies in Translation and Interpreting. She obtained a scholarship at Institut Supérieur de Traducteurs et Interprètes (HEB- ISTI) in Brussels (2007). She holds an MA degree in Iberian and Latin American Studies, MA degree in American Studies and PhD degree in Humanities (all of them: University of Warsaw). She is a member of professional organizations: Polish Association of Hispanists (PSH), Polish Society of Sworn and Specialized Translators (TEPIS) and Spanish Applied Linguistics Association (AESLA). She has written 11 papers on court interpreting and legal translation and published a book on court interpreters (2014, UW). She has been involved in a number of national and international projects concerning legal translator and court interpreter training.
