KEYNOTE SPEAKERS:

dr Joss Moorkens, School of Applied Language & Intercultural Studies, Dublin City University

Joss Moorkens is an Assistant Professor at the School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies at Dublin City University and a researcher affiliated with the ADAPT Centre and the Centre for Translation and Textual Studies. He has authored numerous journal articles and book chapters on translation technology, post-editing of machine translation, user evaluation of machine translation, translator precarity, and translation technology standards. He coedited the book ‘Translation Quality Assessment: From Principles to Practice’, to be published by Springer in 2018.

 

dr Lucas Nunes Vieira, School of Modern Languages, University of Bristol

Lucas Nunes Vieira is a Lecturer in Translation Studies with Technology at the University of Bristol. His main areas of research are translation editing and technology, with a focus on the use of machine translation in human translation workflows. After completing a Modern Languages and Linguistics degree in Brazil and an MA in Language Technologies in France and Portugal, he was awarded a PhD on cognitive effort in post-editing of machine translation from Newcastle University, in the UK. Lucas has published several articles on translation technology and cognition and is a guest co-editor of a special issue of The Journal of Specialised Translation to appear in 2019 on the topic of ‘Post-Editing in Practice: Process, Product and Networks’.

 

dr Mark Shuttleworth, University College London, UK

Mark Shuttleworth has been involved in translation studies research and teaching since 1993, first at the University of Leeds, then at Imperial College London and now at University College London. His publications include the Dictionary of Translation Studies, as well as articles on metaphor in translation, Wikipedia translation, translation technology, translator training and medical translation. His monograph Studying Scientific Metaphor in Translation was published in 2017 and he is also currently working on a second edition of the Dictionary.

 

Invited speakers

dr hab. Łukasz Grabowski, prof. UO, Uniwersytet Opolski

Łukasz Grabowski is Associate Professor at the Institute of English, University of Opole (Poland), where he teaches courses in linguistics and English-to-Polish translation. His research interests include corpus linguistics, translation studies and lexicography. He has published research articles and book chapters internationally in International Journal of Corpus Linguistics and English for Specific Purposes as well as with John Benjamins, Springer and Emerald. He co-organized a series of conferences The Translator and the Computer held in Wrocław, at the Philological School of Higher Education (WSF), in 2012 and 2014.

 

dr hab. Konrad Klimkowski, prof. KUL, Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski

Konrad Klimkowski is a translator, interpreter, academic teacher and researcher in the field of translator/interpreter education. He is an associate professor at the Institute of English Studies, John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, Poland. His main research areas include social constructivist translator/interpreter curriculum, communicative aspects of educational practices, learning as co-emergence of knowledge and entrepreneurial skills in translator/interpreter education.

 

dr hab. Maria Piotrowska, prof. UJ, Uniwersytet Jagielloński

Professor at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, translation practitioner, teacher and researcher; sworn translator of English/Polish; author, reviewer and editor of translation articles and books; Head of the Chair for Translation Studies and Intercultural Communication at the Jagiellonian University; member of EST, member and co-founder of TERTIUM, founder and president of CTER, member of IATIS.

Research interests:

Translation Studies, methodology for translator training, translator’s decision-making process, psychological aspects of translation, sociology of translation, Action Research, translation curricula, translation research models and methods.

 

dr Ewa B. Nawrocka, Uniwersytet Gdański

Ewa B. Nawrocka, PhD. Adjunct at the Department of Translation Studies, Institute of English and American Studies, University of Gdańsk. Translator and reviewer specializing in video games, software and website localization. Cooperates with Polish and international translation and localization companies.

 

dr Piotr Szymczak, IFA, University of Warsaw

Dr Piotr Szymczak is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of English Studies (University of Warsaw) and a member of the European Society for Translation Studies (EST) and Polish Literary Translators’ Association (STL). His interests include digital technologies and social constructivist translation classrooms. He’s currently working on a book on translating for real users in education. Piotr has run a range of authentic translation projects with his students including citizen science projects, Wikipedia translation and editing, literary translation, and crowdsourced language learning aids. A professional translator, Piotr has also translated more than twenty books into Polish and English, including Polish translations of Daniel Kahneman, Dan Goleman, Barack Obama, Lois Lowry, and Ransom Riggs.

 

dr inż. Agenor Hofmann-Delbor, Localize.pl

Founder and Managing Director of Localize.pl. PhD in Information Technology. Since 2003 actively participating in the translation industry in a variety of roles: localization engineer, localization tester, translator, certified trainer, IT manager, project manager, research and development director, sales director, and many others. Founder and Published author at Helion SA with a book on software localization (in Polish) co-written with Marta Bartnicka. Originator and organiser of over 15 large conferences and events, including the Translation and Localization Conference and Konferencja Tłumaczy.

 

Marta Bartnicka, IBM

Marta Bartnicka, M.Sc. (Eng) in Information Technology. Manages the IBM Translation Centre for Central and Eastern Europe, which localizes IBM software, documentation and web solutions into a dozen of local languages. Working for IBM Translation Services for over 20 years, Marta has gathered broad experience in multicultural environments, ranging from hands-on translation practice to the Continuous Delivery market demands, and including Machine Translation deployment in the end-to-end localization process.

 

Wojciech Wołoszyk, Iuridico

Concurrently practising as a lawyer, lawyer-linguist, Polish-English legal translator, academic lecturer and manager in the translation and construction industry. High level of competence and experience in Polish construction and public procurement law, also in translation, proofreading and review of legal texts. CEO of IURIDICO Legal & Financial Translations sp. z o.o., a linguistic services provider for the Court of Justice of the EU, CDT, DGT, the European Central Bank, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and the International Criminal Court in Hague.

 

Szymon Klocek, DGT, European Commission

Szymon Klocek is a graduate of in international relations, applied linguistics and European studies at the University of Warsaw and Warsaw School of Economics. Since 2007, he has been employed in Luxembourg at the Directorate General for Translation (DGT) of the European Commission, initially as a translator, and at present as a project manager within the DGT’s IT unit. As Machine Translation Quality Officer, he is co-responsible for the introduction of neural Machine Translation to the translation workflow of the DGT.

prof. Nijolė Burkšaitienė

Nijolė Burkšaitienė, Ph.D., is a professor at Mykolas Romeris University and Vilnius University (Lithuania) where she teaches Syntax, Modern English, English for Academic Purposes, and Creative writing.

Her research interests include creativity in translation studies, teaching and learning ESP, and validation of adults’ non-formal and informal learning in higher education. She is the author of over 40 research articles, co-author of five books and book chapters, the author and a co-author of five workbooks for ESP students, as well as a co-translator of two monographs from English into Lithuanian and a monograph from Lithuanian into English.

She is an EU expert on validation of non-formal and informal learning outcomes in higher education and one of the creators of the system of assessment and recognition of adults’ non-formal and informal learning in higher education in Lithuania.

Nijolė Burkšaitienė has created and implemented a number of language and lifelong learning projects supported by the EU Structural Funds and the European Commission, as well as taught a wide range of English and educational content courses at various municipal, governmental, and academic institutions in Lithuania and abroad. She also acts as a member of editorial boards of two research journals.

 

prof. Jonė Grigaliūnienė

Professor at the Faculty of Philology, Vilnius University. Graduate of the Department of English Philology, the University of Vilnius. PhD from the Institute of Linguistics, Moscow Academy of Sciences, on the linguistic category of possession in English. Research interests include: contrastive linguistics, semantics, corpus linguistics, learner language, political discourse. Courses taught: corpus linguistics, semantics, political discourse, philosophy of language.

 

prof. Ligija Kaminskienė

Ligija Kaminskienė is a professor at Vilnius University, Faculty of Philology, Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies. Her interests include linguistics, educational management, adult education and translation studies. She has also worked for the Ministry of Education and Culture, was a start-up director and a founder of three educational institutions. Now she enjoys supervising students’ Bachelor and Master degree papers in translation studies – the young researchers’ observations and discoveries happen to be truly breathtaking!

 

prof. Nijolė Maskaliūnienė

Nijolė Maskaliūnienė is a professor and head of the department at Vilnius University, Faculty of Philology, Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies. Her research interests include lexical semantics, terminology, translator training and translation studies. She supervises numerous Bachelor and Master degree papers in translation studies and terminology, for a number of years has supervised students’ internships, she works closely with translation agencies and takes an active part in the work of Lithuanian Association of Translators. The professor has been Editor-in-Chief of the research journal Vertimo studijos (Translation Studies) since 2008.

 

Ingrida Tatolytė

Ingrida Tatolytė is a PhD student at Vilnius University and the author of the book on practical rhetoric for interpreters. She was an instructor of Rhetorics, Editing and Revising, and other related subjects at Vilnius University for many years and taught similar courses at the University of Novi Sad, Tallinn University, and Tallinn University of Technology. As a visiting lecturer, she holds seminars for Lithuanian translators at the European Commission and European Parliament.
