Translating Europe Workshop: The changing profile of the translator profession: technology, competences and fit-for-market training

Date: 23-24 May 2018

Venue: Institute of Applied Linguistics, University of Warsaw, ul. Dobra 55

Organisers: University of Warsaw, The European Commission’s DGT Field Office in Poland, Vilnius University, DGT Field Office in Lithuania

The TEW conference aims to address the changing face and profile of the (specialised) translator profession under the influence of technologies, globalisation, professionalization, crowd-sourcing and other market forces. In particular, it intends to focus on recent technological developments, such as machine translation and CAT tools. It will explore the centre and the boundaries of the profession to understand how translation is addressed under varied profiles (and names): a reviser, project manager, translation quality manager, terminologist, post-editor, website/game localizer, subtitler, multilingual expert, etc. We would like to identify new skills and competences required of translators in the technology-rich world and, next, to survey to what extent and how university-level and CPD-level training should address them to ensure fit-for-market training.

This 1.5 day event will bring together translation studies scholars, translation trainers and industry experts, linking the academia with the industry. It will comprise of a series of lectures, talks, papers and practical workshops for students and graduates oriented at acquiring new skills related to emerging professional profiles.

We invite proposals addressing the following and related topics:

  • The changing profile of the translator profession
  • Emerging profiles related to translation
  • The centre and the boundaries of the profession
  • Machine translation and its impact on the profession and the translation industry
  • Recent developments in CAT tools
  • Challenges of localisation
  • Challenges of postediting
